This is my first hike here and my favorite day yet! Lanikai Pillbox hike is a highly trafficked well-known easy to moderate hike. It is also known as the Ka’iwa Ridge Trail. The views are amazing and the color of the ocean below are all just breath taking. The hike itself starts out with an incline. The structures most commonly (and mistakenly) called “pillboxes” were actually Coast Artillery observation stations from 1943, these never housed weapons. Pillboxes were actually meant to house high-powered weapons.
People could choose to do an in-and-out hike to the 2 structures and back, which are covered in colorful graffiti as they overlook the Mokolua islands and the Ko’olua mountains. The Hiker also have the option to do a loop. Trail runners are often on this loop (and I can’t wait to be one!)
The land is owned by the Department of Land and Natural Resources as part of Hawaii’s Na Ala Here trail system.
All-in-all, this was a very fun hike I’ll be sure to take all of my visitors on. Also it can be as short as you want to make it so you can spend the rest of the afternoon on Lanikai beat or go have lunch in Kailua.
